Persistence: The essential ingredient to your success in life (3 min read).
The basis of persistence is the power of will and desire. When these two are properly combined, you have an irresistible pair that ensures success. It is pretty much impossible to achieve great success without sacrifice and it is persistence that supports sacrifice.
Yes, we all know this stuff, but I want you to think about your answer to the following question: How persistent are you?
I’m pretty sure you are all aware of Bob’s story, his car accident where he was forced to move home with his parents and start again financially as he had nothing after his year of rehabilitation. Bob will admit to being desperate for money, as he had none, so his desire was massive. After Bob’s decision to become a property developer he backed it up with persistence. He persisted with property development until well… he still does it. Bob used his desire and willpower to cement his persistence to achieve what he wanted.
Most people are ready to throw in the towel and give up at the first sign of opposition and only some will carry on despite opposition, until they reach what they want. Towel throwing is usually accompanied by a validated list of reasons they tell themselves but also hidden behind a cloud of personal disappointment.
So, what is the remedy to a lack of persistence?
I’ve already alluded to it, Simon Sinek talks about it, Apple use it with their brand strategy… I initially referred to it as desire but ultimately it is your why.
Bobs why was his desire for success, his desire for money and his desire for leaving his mark on the world and it still is. He likes being Bob Andersen, he likes property developing, he likes teaching others and he likes sharing. He knows his why.
So, another question for you: Do you know your why?
Your why for different things will be different. Losing 20kg’s could be to improve health so you get to meet your grandkids, or it could be for your upcoming wedding.
What is your why for property development, if you keep digging down, past the money, what does the money give you. More importantly, is it strong enough to support the persistence you are going to need to achieve it?
In the words of Napoleon Hill: Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat and this weakness may be remedied by building a stronger fire under your desires.
So, what does this mean for you?
Well, if you are wanting to achieve anything, you must have a strong why. Start by being clear about what you want and what it will do for you. Then write it down and have a really good think about it. You need to be sure it will move you past the towel throwing process and ensure you pass the porch test.
